High-End Covered Porch Transformation in Winterfield
$50,000 to $100,000 in 2019
To solve the problem of an exposed patio that was unusable in bad weather, we designed and built a high-end covered porch with brick columns and a custom roof that looked original to the home. This award-winning transformation required complex engineering, including a massive steel I-beam for an open view and a unique 3-foot roof extension to safely clear the existing fireplace.

High-End Covered Porch Transformation in Winterfield
This high-end covered porch transformation in Winterfield, Midlothian, was designed to solve a common problem: the homeowners had a beautiful outdoor space with a paver patio and fireplace, but it was completely exposed to the elements. Rain and snow made it miserable to enjoy, leaving their outdoor oasis unusable for much of the year. They envisioned a supreme outdoor living space they could enjoy anytime—a high-end, permanent-feeling porch that looked original to their home.
A Strategic & Creative Design Solution
The challenge was significant. The existing patio was U-shaped and built around a functioning fireplace that couldn't be obstructed or have its smoke trapped. Our solution was a strategically designed and creatively executed new roof supported by new brick columns that perfectly matched the home's existing brickwork. The new structure was meticulously designed so that it tied into the existing fascia and soffit and brick, making the new roof look as if it had always been there. We also integrated new ceiling fans and a new lighting and electrical source, which involved creatively solving wiring issues caused by the existing raised patio.
Overcoming Complex Engineering Obstacles
This was far from a standard build. To provide a completely open, unobstructed view and eliminate the need for any columns in center, the design utilized a large I-beam to support the entire roof structure. Our team used a material lift system and temporary bracing to hoist the massive 600 lb. steel beam into place.
To solve the fireplace challenge, we implemented a creative design idea: an extended rake projection of 3 feet (far beyond the typical 12 inches). This custom overhang ensured smoke from the chimney would not be trapped within the new structure. Finally, to guarantee the home could support the added load of the new roof, our team engineered and added a header over a header, safely transferring the load.
An Award-Winning Midlothian Porch That Exceeded Expectations
The final result was a stunning success, earning recognition as a 2020 NARI runner-up award-winner for Outdoor Living. This accolade highlighted the project's superior, creative design and high-end craftsmanship. This award-winning Midlothian porch stands as a testament to a collaborative process built on great design and clear communication. This was reflected perfectly by the client, who noted that the finished product and the communication exceeded our expectations.
Today, this high-end covered porch in Winterfield is more than just an addition; it's the perfect backyard retreat and the great place to hang out with friends that the homeowners always envisioned. Life is better on the porch.
