Weathered deck transformed into multi-tiered, multifunctional, low maintenance retreat with a view.
$50,000-$100,000 in 2022
Located in Chester, VA, this unique outdoor living project earned the title of PRO Central Virginia Grand Winner for Residential Landscape Design/Outdoor Living. The project completely transformed a weathered, existing three-tier worn outdoor structure into a stunning, multi-functional retreat. By upgrading to premium Azek/Timbertech composite materials and integrating strategic nighttime lighting, the new layout provides an expansive, low-maintenance outdoor haven that perfectly balances beauty and utility.

Before the beautiful finishes could be installed, our team had to navigate significant logistical hurdles. The property's existing hardscape limited access to the work area, preventing the heavy equipment needed to dig 24 footings from reaching the backyard via the driveway. To solve this, we created a temporary access path on the other side of the house, carefully navigating across a ditch and under trees.
Additionally, the homeowners had a thriving koi pond directly adjacent to the work zone. Because construction debris could harm the fish, we installed protective barriers between the work area and the pond to ensure the aquatic life remained completely safe throughout the build.
Enhancing the View with Azek/Timbertech
The original deck suffered from old, clunky wood railings and a crowded layout. To un-restrict the beautiful backyard views, we replaced the bulky wood with finer, low-maintenance aluminum railings. The original wood decking was swapped out for premium, low-maintenance composite decking and trim, creating a crisper, warmer aesthetic.
We also removed an obtrusive tree that was crowding the mid-level deck; this single change allowed us to increase the mid-level footprint and install wider, angled stairs without needing a restrictive landing.
Superior Craftsmanship and Subconscious Flow
Every detail of this deck was intentionally designed to improve pedestrian traffic and visual appeal. We eliminated a redundant stair connecting the upper deck to the ground, ensuring traffic no longer bisected the upper seating area.
Our carpenters installed the composite deck boards at a 45-degree angle, a subtle design choice that subconsciously points guests in the direction of the desired traffic flow between tiers. To finish the look, all three decks feature a picture-frame border at the perimeter, cleanly eliminating any visible butt-ends.
Multifunctional Storage and Twilight Ambiance
Functionality was dramatically increased by building a water diversion system beneath the upper deck. This created a protected lower level with dry storage for a portable generator and patio cushions, accessible from both sides of the deck. As the sun sets, the space transforms again. We incorporated strategically placed low-voltage riser lights and post-cap lights to provide gorgeous accent lighting and added safety in low-light conditions. To top it all off, the upper deck railings feature a drink rail cap—the perfect spot to rest a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. The new space has provided many, many hours of pure joy!
